Petition to Change Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Filed with Brattleboro Town Clerk

A petition calling for Brattleboro’s Representative Town Meeting to change from its current elected, representative structure to “One Person, One Vote” was officially filed and accepted at the Brattleboro Town Clerk’s office on August 4th.

The filing of the petition requires the Selectboard to put two questions out to the voters of Brattleboro.  The first asks if Brattleboro shall discontinue the representative form of annual meeting.

The second question asks if voters agree to changing to “one person, one vote” (also called Australian ballot), if they agree that Brattleboro’s current Representative Town Meeting should change.

If passed, all voters in Brattleboro would then vote by secret ballot, to approve the general fund budget, all authorizations for major bonding or borrowing, all public questions, all charter amendments, and all elections of town officers.
